What is Nasya?

Nasya is a traditional ayurvedic nasal treatment used to address body imbalances above the shoulders. It relieves conditions such as sinus congestion, sinusitis, headaches, hormone imbalance, and poor memory and concentration.

Nasya involves herbal oils being administered through your nasal passages. Various oils are used according to your body constitution and disease conditions. The oil is absorbed through the intricate network of blood vessels in the nostrils and also stimulates the rich local nerve supply.

Nasya has a profound effect on the brain and nervous system. It improves sleep, prevents memory loss, improves concentration, and the functioning of sense organs (indriyas). It also enhances the health and function of the organs and structures in the neck and head.

Your Nasya treatment begins with a relaxing head, face marma point, and neck massage using warmed ayurvedic oil. The massage is followed by a facial steam inhalation. Then a precise dose of Nasya oil is poured gently into your nostrils.

There are several types of Nasya documented in classical Ayurveda texts which may use oils, ghee (clarified butter), extract of herbs or fine herb powders to bring about the desired effects. Our Ayurvedic doctor Ram Bhandari or therapists will carefully personalise the procedure, dosages, and treatment protocols to address your health and well-being needs.

Nasya is beneficial for healthy individuals and is recommended as part of the daily Ayurveda regimen for good health (Dinacharya). It works primarily by cleansing accumulated Kapha dosha and toxins from the head, nose, throat, sinus and neck regions. It works as a detox therapy or as a healing and nourishing therapy depending on the medication used.

Why Pichu is Best

Nasya is also prescribed as part of a treatment protocol for conditions such as:

Nasya is a Sanskrit word that refers to the nasal administration of medication. The nose is an important organ and pathway to the internal systems of the body. Nasal medications are easily absorbed into the body.

The Process on the Spot

For your Nasya treatment, you will lie down on the treatment table facing up. A pillow or rolled towel will be placed under your neck so that your head tilts slightly. The therapy begins with an oil massage (Snehana) to the face, neck and shoulders, using sweeping strokes along the nasal bridge and forehead. This is followed by a facial steam or fomentation (Swedana) using a hot towel or steam inhalator.

The head is then titled backwards. While closing one of your nostrils, the therapist will administer drops of the medicated oil into the open nostril. This is repeated on the other nostril. As part of the procedure, you will be asked to inhale deeply while the therapist massages the nasal bridge and forehead. When a sensation of the medication reaching the back of the throat or mouth is felt, you can spit out any excess medication. Finally, the therapist will give you warm water to rinse out your mouth.

Duration: 30 minutes to 60 minutes.

It is recommended that you have 5 – 10 treatments in order to obtain the best results.

You will also be given special home care advice recommended to help treat sinus conditions to optimise your treatment results.
